The FDA is warning consumers and doctors about the possible risk of potentially harmful side effects from taking certain drugs, including Viagra. In a letter to physicians and other health care providers, the agency warned of “risk of harm to the patient if a person takes the drug at the same time as any other drug.”

“The Food and Drug Administration has no jurisdiction to distribute these safety warnings,” she wrote.
The letter, sent Thursday to doctors and others who have received information about Viagra and other drugs for which it’s a risk, says the FDA is reviewing the potential risk.
“The FDA has authority to require any physician, dentist or other health care provider, or other person with a prescription to provide a written warning or to require a prescription for a particular drug if the physician, dentist or other health care provider has determined that the physician, dentist or other health care provider should not prescribe this drug,” the FDA said in a statement. “It is our policy to ensure that health care providers, other healthcare providers and physicians who are trained to prescribe drugs to treat specific health problems are well aware of the potential risks associated with the use of any drug.”
Hermann added that the agency is reviewing the safety of Viagra and other drugs “to ensure appropriate action is taken to minimize the risk of adverse effects and to ensure that the safety and effectiveness of any drug is not compromised.”
The FDA’s letter was sent Thursday to the maker of a product that sells erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, Eli Lilly and Co. Inc. Inc.’s Levitra and Cialis.
Levitra and Cialis are both prescription drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The letter to physicians and other health care providers from the FDA said it is important that patients and their physicians tell patients and doctors about Viagra and other drugs they are taking.

“It is important that physicians and other health care providers provide a complete list of all medications they are currently taking, including prescription drugs and nonprescription medications, as well as any new drugs,” said the FDA. “We urge patients and their physicians to complete a complete drug information sheet, including those drugs that are currently on the market, and to discuss all available alternatives, including nonprescription drugs.”
